Whole Foods or Powdered Supplements?

There is so much information out there now regarding health and fitness on the internet that it can hard to find a singular answer to a question like this.  There are also so many conflicting opinions.  It can be easy to just pick one of these and malign the other, but both whole Foods and powdered supplements can both play important roles in a balanced diet.

be Whole foods should be the primary source of nutrients and they provide a variety of health benefits. They contain complex nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber, in their natural state. When eaten, these nutrients work together in the body. Because whole foods tend to be more bioavailable the body can absorb and utilize the nutrients more efficiently compared to isolated supplements.

Powdered supplements, on the other hand, are a convenient way to get nutrients, especially when whole foods aren't practical. They can provide nutrients like amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamins. Powdered supplements can also offer highly concentrated doses of the particular nutrient or nutrients they provide.  There are plenty of times where supplements can really help you stay on track and continue to meet your goals.

The easiest way to think about this debate/question is to make whole foods the primary source of your nutrition and food intake, and use supplements when needed.  Powdered supplements have a time and place. What does that mean?  If you are traveling and can’t get in all your veggies, add greens powder to a smoothie.  You can do the same with protein powder.   If you have been sweating and working out a lot and water isn’t enough, add in some electrolytes.  Worried about getting sick or feeling run down, vitamin C & zinc packets can be great to help boost your immune system.

Supplements however should never be your primary source of nutrients and you do need to carefully read those ingredient labels before selecting the best ones for your needs.  Be sure to pick ones with limited ingredients and avoid fillers and artificial colors.  Also be aware of the calories if you have specific body composition goals.

Powdered supplements should not be a regular replacement for whole foods.  The health benefits of eating whole foods vastly outweigh powdered supplements, but supplements can help us out when foods aren’t readily available. Just choose wisely! Here at Celebration CrossFit we are committed to help you navigate our nutrition and fitness goals, reach out if you want help.
