Summer is here and with it comes the barbecues, pool parties, and more opportunities to get together with our friends and family. Summer parties could be a real challenge to our nutrition goals. Some people decide to put their nutrition “on hold” during the summer time because they think that they cannot enjoy their time, while sticking to their goals. There is never a good time to throw your nutrition out of the window, so I’m here to give you some tips to have fun AND keep the weight off this summer.

1. Prepare

To successfully stay on track with your nutrition during the summer you need preparation. Be prepared to stay in control of what you put in your body. If you are not sure that you will find healthy snacks at a party, bring them yourself. While you are at it, bring enough for everyone. Pair fresh veggies with hummus and you will have a nutritious snack that will be the hit of the party. Same goes for desserts, bring some fresh fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth. You can still have a piece of cake or ice cream (its ok, summer is hot, I get it) but if you have fresh fruit, you will be less likely to overindulge on other more sugary options.

2. Make Smart Choices

Typically, there are plenty of protein options in a barbecue, choose the ones that will help you stay on track. Have grilled chicken or steak, not burgers or hotdogs. Load up on the veggies and use the plate method. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water, it will keep you hydrated and will curb your appetite. If you are drinking alcohol, drink a glass of water in between alcoholic beverages and avoid sugary cocktails.

3. Remember Your “Why”

Remember why you started this health journey, think about all the progress you have made and what has motivated you to stay on track. Be determined to say no to that extra slice of cake, or to that extra burger. Say no to another beer. Well-intended people might try to push you to “relax” and stop caring so much about what you eat, this is the time to hold on to your why and put your health first. Don’t forget that you have a bigger picture, a bigger goal that goes beyond this summer. You are playing for your health and you want to be healthy this summer and all of the summers to come. It is time to remember why you are doing this: you!
